Port Hardy 3 June 2023

2561 :

This is the last full day when we'll be in contact with the outside world, and so the days from the 4th through the tenth are likely not to be posted until we return to 'civilization' (supposing that having internet is synonymous with being civilized.)

This morning we had a nice self-serve breakfast downstairs in the pub while watching a bit of the French Open, went to the marina to do laundry, and the mall to get mosquito repellent. (Civilization.)

2564 :

Walking to lunch, we encountered these flowers. Yesterday they were just perky red buds at the top of long stems.

At left, a little evidence of civic pride – I think a hard thing to do with conflicting cultural notions of 'pride' and being literally at the end of the road.

2565 :

Lunch at Sporty's reputedly 'Port Hardy's favorite joint.' Over-breaded but excellent fish, blackened snapper on an okay salad, and a cider that lists as its second ingredient Vodka.

We passed our 'observed Covid tests' administered by a nurse named Rochelle.

One more meal to come: something sushi.

2566 :

Finally, some food worth memorializing!

Karai Sushi and Korean Grill on Market Street fed us dinner, miso soup, Edamame, good green tea, and the gorgeous edible pictured at left: the Port Hardy Roll, prawns, (pretend) crab meat, cream cheese, smoked salmon, seaweed and rice with a 'special sauce'. Beautiful to look at, difficult to get into your mouth, and then delicious. We are plotting to return here Sunday week.

And now to bed, to the airport tomorrow by 9am; rain anticipated, showers here, drizzle at Klemtu. Our clothing is packed in garbage bags in anticipation . . . but we would not be disappointed if the rain didn't come true. At this point, the rest of the week is looking sunny.
