Noon departure, plenty of time even with Sunday traffic? We hope. Great luck on 128, only one trailer-towing hog. Very dry hillsides, brown, not golden. Traffic still moving well on the 101, but at Windsor a CalTrans information sign said “Santa Rosa, 12 minutes, Petaluma 18 minutes, Novato 82 minutes” and we knew there was gonna be trouble ahead. So why not stop in Petaluma for ice cream at Lala's? Sienna was able to get directions from her phone on the fly, something Rochelle and I have never figured out how to do – maybe this trip we'll learn; her reward: a Lavender ice cream cone. I had Chocolate à l'Orange. Guess what Rochelle had... |

Into the stop-and-go in San Francisco, so we took a side trip through the Sunset, row upon row of 1920s houses, a striking Russian Orthodox church. Damiana joined us for dinner at 8 Immortals on Taraval. Unusual food; a deep fried Spiced Salty Pork Spareribs – not that spicy or salty, and super delicious. Also great General Chiucken Wings and Wor Wonton. On to the Aloft hotel beside the airport. We're parking here for $10/day, but the first night, we discover, is on the hotel's fee scale, $30. We should have booked the parking for one extra day; remind me to write this in my Google and TripAdvisor reviews. Suckie. |

Photos by Rochelle and Sienna ...and Michael with no attribution. The lower left photo is the lovely view from our fifth floor room. Up early; bet none of us sleep very well, as we're too excited to be away to the Big Island tomorrow morning.
(Rochelle had vanilla. “That's not even a flavor,” according to Seth Meyers. Sure is yummy, though.) |
