day 5After last night's late night return from the mantas, we got a slow start to market in Hawi – a disappointing market, with very few produce vendors. Nevertheless, we got some beautiful eggplants and some lettuce, a pineapple, and two gorgeous red onions. The trip to Hawi, however, isn't so much for the market as it is for the end of the road at Pololu Overlook, and then lunch at Bamboo, a tradition going back several years. |

Another tradition: a picture of a family at the Overlook. |
Then over the top of the North Kohala Mountains to Waimea (aka Kamuela) to do a little shopping. On the horizon, a fire on the side on Mauna Kea – yes, they're having a drought, too – adds a red-brown tinge to the base of the clouds. Evacuations are happening off the Saddle Road, and tomorrow promises to be very breezy. Just can't escape. |

A second night of Ono; tonight, baked Macadamia-encrusted Ono steaks in a Coconut cream Macadamia sauce, and then an ice cream tasting extravaganza. |
